Champions League list presented

The club has presented the official Champions league list of players. Only notable ommisions are third goalkeeper Berni and injured defender Diakite. Here is the complete list:

Goalkeepers:  1. Muslera, 32. Ballota

Defenders: 85. Behrami, 25. Cribari, 29. De Silvestri, 3. Kolarov, 86. Sannibale, 6. Scaloni, 13. Siviglia, 2. Stendardo, 8. Zauri

Midfielders: 10. Baronio, 40. Casini, 81. Del Nero, 4. Firmani, 24. Ledesma, 68. Manfredini, 11. Mauri, 83. Meghni, 26. Mudingayi, 5. Mutarelli

Forwards: 20. Makinwa, 19. Pandev, 18. Rocchi, 17. Tare

Second consecutive draw: Sampdoria-Lazio 0-0

I was unable to watch the match and based on the comments from friend who watched it and based on paper report, I think I did not miss too much this time. Nevertheless, I am posting the match report from Channel4.

Sampdoria: Castellazzi; Campagnaro, Sala, Lucchini, Zenoni, Palombo, Volpi, Ziegler; Delvecchio (Sammarco 66), Bellucci (Pieri 89); Caracciolo (Montella 60)

Lazio: Ballotta; Behrami, Scaloni, Cribari, Zauri; Mudingayi, Ledesma, Mutarelli, Manfredini (Meghni 75); Pandev (Tare 91), Rocchi (Makinwa 62)

Despite playing with 10 men, Sampdoria wasted a golden opportunity in stoppages to defeat Lazio, but         instead it’s the Biancocelesti’s second consecutive draw. This fixture had not ended goalless since                 1976.

Both teams passed their European tests midweek with flying colours, as Lazio entered the Champions League and Samp got through to the UEFA Cup. In strictly Serie A terms, it was the Blucerchiati who had the advantage, having won 2-1 at Siena rather than the Romans’ disappointing 2-2 draw to Torino. Doria had Antonio Cassano in the side for the first time since his summer move, but he sat on the bench with Vincenzo Montella.

Lazio’s injury crisis ruled out Diakhite’, Aleksander Kolarov, Sebastiano Siviglia, Guglielmo Stendardo, Simone Del Nero and Stefano Mauri. Always an entertaining fixture, this tie has not ended in a draw since the spectacular 3-3 on April 21, 1996.

Andrea Caracciolo wasted a good chance after five minutes, his shot flashing across the face of goal. At the other end, Massimo Mutarelli nodded a Cristian Ledesma set-piece over the bar.

Ledesma tested Antonio Mirante from almost 30 metres, but Tommaso Rocchi was far more dangerous as he used his strength to hold off a defender and the right-foot strike was palmed out of the top corner.

Sergio Volpi’s low free kick for Samp pierced the wall, but none of his teammates could get the final touch.

Christian Manfredini created a wonderful opportunity by dribbling between two defenders, but when he was clear on goal incredibly ballooned wide. Goran Pandev also wasted a promising counter-attack.

The best chance of the game so far arrived on 40 minutes, as Claudio Bellucci’s looping header from a Reto Ziegler pass was spectacularly fingertipped out from under the crossbar by 43-year-old goalkeeper Marco Ballotta.

After the break Ballotta was fortunate not to concede. He did not come out to grab a corner kick, so a goalline clearance was needed to deny Caracciolo.

The deadlock remained in place, so Walter Mazzarri introduced fan favourite Montella for Caracciolo. Delio Rossi surprisingly took off Rocchi for the pacey Stephen Ayodele Makinwa.

Mirante blocked a Gaby Mudingayi daisy-cutter in front of the line. Mourad Meghni wanted a penalty less than a minute after coming on, but the referee correctly waved play on.

Ledesma sent a screamer just past the near post from distance, but there was a real scare for the Biancocelesti.

Ballotta spilled a powerful Bellucci snapshot and Luciano Zauri was there for the clearance as Montella prepared to pounce.

Sampdoria were left with 10 men for the final eight minutes, as Ziegler got a second booking for a foul on Mutarelli. This put paid to hopes of seeing Cassano make his debut.

Still, the home side should have won it at the death. Montella’s dummy left Paolo Sammarco totally unmarked with only the goalkeeper to beat, but astonishingly he chipped it over the bar of an open goal!

Valon Behrami got a scare in stoppages, as the referee flashed red for the challenge on Mirko Pieri, but he apologised immediately as he had taken out the wrong card!

Carrizo deal is off, until January at least

This is a statement released by Lazio yesterday afternoon:

“Lazio and River Plate would like to communicate that due to bureaucratic reasons, the agreement of July 18 is now no longer valid and Carrizo will remain property of River Plate until Lazio can sign him,”

After weeks of twists and turns, Lazio have officially pulled out of the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo.

The Biancocelesti’s attempt to replace the retired Angelo Peruzzi has been long and arduous and it seems that their weeks of attempts to secure the services of young star Carrizo were in vain.

The capital club agreed a deal with the 23-year-old’s club River Plate amounting to around £5m, but the Aquile were thwarted by complications in Carrizo’s attempt to procure an Italian passport.

While Carrizo insisted that hs great granfather was born in Pinerolo in Piedmont, the documents that were shown were called into question and the process was delayed.

Goalkeeper situation and Fernando Muslera

Since the Juan Pablo Carrizo saga is not going to end before the deadline for the hand over of player`s list to play in the next season, Lazio signed another goalkeeper, namely Fernando Muslera from Montevideo Nazional Uruguay.

You would probably say now: why another extra-communitario? Well the good thing is that Muslera has already received an EU passport and therefore may freely play for us. Meanwhile, Carrizo is expected to go on loan until January or next year (most probably in Spain with Real Zaragosa being favorites to get him).

Few stats for Muslera:

Name: Fernando Muslera
Birth date: 16/06/1986
Country: URUGUAY
City: MOntevideo
Position: Goallkeeper
Play in: Deportivo Nacional

Lazio back where belongs: Champions League

After a thrilling match full of emotions and in front of 50,000 frenetic chants, Lazio managed to beat 3-1 Dinamo Bucuresti and therefore qualify for the main Champions League draw. Those of you who read my blog were aware of the injuries (and suspensions) Delio Rossi was facing and when you take into account a non favorable match from the first leg, this Lazio win and qualification was one of the most pleasant and happy moment of my time as being LAZIALE.

Since I was unable to watch the match (like the majority of Lazio international fans as RAI only broadcasted for domestic audience) I am posting a match report from a third party website as well as some clips where you can watch the goals from the match as well as the video from Fiumiciono Airport when the team returned to Rome in the late hours.

Match report is here:

Diakite to undergo surgery – out for 3-4 months

From SkySports.com

Lazio defender Mobido Diakite is to undergo surgery after scans revealed he has fractured his leg.

Diakite sustained the injury during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Torino and it has now been decided surgery will be required to reduce the damage.

Scans have shown that the 20-year-old has fractured his right shin bone following a collision with Torino striker Nicola Ventola towards the end of the first half of the sides’ Serie A opener.

The news is a major blow to Lazio coach Delio Rossi who already has a number of injury problems ahead of a difficult UEFA Champions League third qualifying round meeting with Dinamo Bucharest on Tuesday.

Lazio – Torino 2;2

The new season kicked off in the best of fashion as Lazio and Torino awarded nothing less than a spectacle at Stadio Olimpico on that hot Saturday afternoon.

Lazio was the better side throughout the match but Torino got a not deserved point after two blunders, one on each half by Ballota and De Silvestri. It is worth to mention that former Lazio keeper Mateo Sereni produced some remarkable saves in the firt half to deny us taking the lead. Overall it was a fantastic performance by our players even though I though that after Kolarov and Diakite were sent off due to injuries.

I will not going to cry for this draw because there is simply no time for that. Tomorrow we play the return leg with Dinamo Bucuresti and it is such a crucial match. Hope we get lucky this time as the luck abandoned us at Olimpico for two straight matches.

More match reports can be found here and here.

Matchday 1: Lazio – Torino

             VS.

So, to follow up with the other welcoming post, we start the new season with a very decent team: Torino. They made some great signing during the summer and what is more, they have a great coach in Walter Novellino.

On the other hand, Delio Rossi has so many worries in his head considering that three first choice central defenders are out for this match and because won`t also have Mauri while the likes of Behrami, Mutarelli and Rocchi are not 100% prepared.

Nevertheless, here are 2 match previews from Channel4 and Goal.com

Probable line ups:

Lazio: Ballotta, De Silvestri, Scaloni, Diakite, Zauri, Behrami, Mutarelli, Ledesma, Del Nero, Pandev, Rocchi.

Torino: Sereni, Comotto, Natali, Lanna, Di Loreto, Grella, Corini, Rosina, Lazetic, Bjelanovic, Ventola.
